ABOUT

ABOUT

Andrea Abbatangelo is a visual artist who graduated with Distinction from Central Saint Martins with an MA in Fine Art: Digital. He has developed an interdisciplinary practice spanning sculpture, printmaking, public art, and socially engaged methodologies. His work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, Africa, and the United States, including presentations at Phoenix Art Space (Brighton), Atelierhaus LEW1 (Darmstadt), Catinca Tabacaru Gallery (Harare), and within Manifesta 11 (Zurich).

His research-driven practice explores the intersections of consciousness, biodiversity, and non-human intelligence through site-specific installations and participatory frameworks. Central to his work is the ongoing series New Observations on the History of Bees, which investigates pesticide impact on pollinator cognition by bridging Western scientific methodologies with traditional knowledge systems, including Vedic and Theosophical frameworks. This body of work, supported by a UAL Postgraduate Scholarship (2021-2023), has been featured in The Unfold Project: a Graduate Showcase and will be published by Lonely Stone Press.

Currently, Abbatangelo is developing BioViscous during his residency at Alias Studio x Serpentine's Future Art Ecosystems (April - July 2025). This project comprises two converging directions: BeeVision, an AI-driven immersive installation that simulates how pesticides affect bee perception using computational systems trained on environmental data, and speculative bio-materials research exploring protective barriers for pollinators. His practice consistently engages with collaborative research, working alongside biologists, hypnotherapists, and community groups to explore multi-species consciousness and environmental care.

Abbatangelo's works integrate diverse media—from traditional printmaking techniques like drypoint to contemporary bio-materials and computational systems—always in service of investigating perception, memory, and multi-species communication. His recent series Inkblot for Bees draws inspiration from Rorschach tests to engage both human and non-human consciousness through symbolic abstraction, while incorporating Reiki practice and active visualization into his artistic process.

His commitment to socially engaged practice is demonstrated through public art projects such as Radical Time(2017-2020), an assemblage installation that evolved from his participation in Gustav Metzger's Remember Nature at Serpentine Galleries (2015), addressing themes of climate crisis and sustainability within contemporary art practice.

Abbatangelo's work has been recognised through significant residencies including the 12. Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie at Atelierhaus Ludwig-Engel-Weg (2023), where he collaborated with biologists at Technische Universität Darmstadt to explore bio-toxicology and pollinator decline, and CTG(R): Zimbabwe (2018). His exhibitions span major institutions including Tate Liverpool, MOCAD Detroit, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and venues across Europe. Through this approach, Abbatangelo creates accessible yet conceptually rigorous artworks that invite audiences into expanded modes of sensing and understanding across species boundaries.
