AkA Andrea Abbatangelo
A digital identity within Náttura
AkA Andrea Abbatangelo is the digital and on-chain identity of researcher-artist Andrea Abbatangelo. It operates within Náttura, an extended artistic workfield investigating ecological perception, computational phenomenology and multispecies intelligence.
AkA brings biological observation into dialogue with computational imagination.
Microscopy, printmaking, environmental sensing, material experiments and artist-trained generative models become images, moving-image works and on-chain artworks. Each work carries the trace of a wider research process and forms part of an evolving ecological system.
Náttura
Náttura is a multispecies soft architecture: an environment in which art, science and technology form temporary systems of inquiry.
The workfield explores how perception and intelligence emerge through relationships between living organisms, materials, environmental conditions and computational systems. Its manifestations include responsive installations, artificial intelligence models, microscopy archives, speculative biomaterials, datasets, experimental instruments and digital artworks.
Each manifestation functions as a perceptual organ within a larger ecology. Together, these organs observe how different forms of life sense their surroundings, respond to disruption, create relationships and develop environmental memory.
The crystalline installation originally developed for Science Gallery Monterrey represents one physical configuration of Náttura. BeeVision, BioViscous, Hyper-Náttura extend the same research across biological, material and computational forms.
AkA within the workfield
AkA is the authorial interface through which selected manifestations of Náttura enter digital and on-chain circulation.
The identity connects Andrea Abbatangelo’s established artistic practice with an evolving computational presence. Its works emerge from Andrea’s own research materials, including antique microscope slides, biological specimens, drypoint matrices, photography, environmental observations and scientific collaborations.
Generative models are developed as perceptual systems. Their training materials and visual languages originate in Andrea’s archive, while prompt compositions draw on fragments of historical biology and chemistry texts. This process creates an encounter between empirical observation, material memory and computational interpretation.
Authorship remains rooted in Andrea’s research and artistic decisions. AkA gives these digital manifestations a distinct public identity and a permanent structure of provenance.
Perception / ProtectionSeven works from BeeVision and BioViscous, 2025
AkA’s first curated on-chain series brings together seven unique digital works developed during Alias Studio × Serpentine Future Art Ecosystems in 2025.
Three works emerge from BeeVision, an artist-trained generative system investigating pollinator vision and pesticide-induced perceptual disruption. BeeVision draws on research into compound eyes, ultraviolet sensitivity, neurological alteration and the changing ability of bees to orient themselves within an environment.
Four works emerge from BioViscous, a connected body of research imagining adaptive membranes, vascular structures and speculative biomaterials as forms of ecological care.
These works explore protection as a permeable relationship between organism, material and environment.
Together, the seven works move from perception to disruption, adaptation and protection. They form a closed series of seven 1/1 digital artworks.
Three BeeVision works.
Four BioViscous works.
Seven unique on-chain artworks.
Forthcoming.
Research directions:
BeeVision
A computational investigation into pollinator perception, environmental toxicity and altered cognition. BeeVision explores how chemical exposure may affect colour, orientation, memory and the fragmented visual field of a bee.
BioViscous
A speculative material ecology exploring membranes, bio-glass, vascular movement and adaptive protection. BioViscous imagines materials capable of participating in relationships of care between vulnerable organisms and changing environments.
Hyper-Náttura
A local and modular infrastructure for microscopy, dataset construction and experimental artificial intelligence. Hyper-Náttura develops new visual languages from historical scientific images, biological observations and material archives.
Provenance
BeeVision and BioViscous were developed by Andrea Abbatangelo through Alias Studio × Serpentine Future Art Ecosystems (April - September 2025).

The research builds on New Observations on the History of Bees (2022-2025), & Inkblot for Bees (2023 - 2024), both part of the same ongoing body of work initiated during Andrea’s MA Fine Art: Digital at Central Saint Martins and developed through microscopy, printmaking and scientific exchange in Darmstadt.
